Changing EUREGIO mountain communities and villages II
Workshop
Cavalese 2-4 April 2025

In this second edition of the workshop, we propose once again an interdisciplinary approach to understanding global processes of change and their local manifestations within Euregio space. Specifically, we examine the case of Val di Fiemme in Trentino and its centuries-old institution, the “Magnificent Community”. The Community represents a longstading model of collective management of common goods: mountain pastures, meadows and, above all, woodlands. Over the centuries, it has successfully protected and enhanced its environmental resources and made the timber trade an important and profitable economic activity for the valley.

The main question we seek to address in the workshop is: how can this historical form of local institution address current environmental challenges such as climate changes? By exploring this question, we also hope to gain broader insights into how the management of common goods can contribute to the conservation and sustainable development of ecosystems and ecosystem services in local Alpine systems.

Educational activities include seminars, participatory sessions, guided tours, and workshops.

Participants: students from the universities of Bolzano, Innsbruck, and Trento.
